Last week I mentioned that I would write something about ‘communicating with animals’, not knowing that moment would be so soon. Communicating with animals? Isn’t that something you do with your pet daily? Yes, that is correct. But there is another way to communicate with your pet, an unconscious way that can be changed into an purposeful way.

In 2008 I participated in the class ‘Telepathy with Animals’ by Cecilia van der Drift. Purely out of interest, because I feel connected with animals, but also with the thought in mind that it could be useful in my work as an animal photographer.

After the two-day class my feeling was one of doubt. Generally I have difficulty to find the peace inside myself for meditation. Also interpreting my subject’s signals correctly made me doubt myself about being able to connect. Until one meditation I met a very direct German sheepdog. ‘If you don’t believe you can talk to me why should I talk to you?’ That was a startling moment and also one of sinking in that I could never have said that to myself.

‘Sky, what is your favorite toy?’

In my career as animal photographer I encountered failure in a photo shoot only a few times. One time a photo shoot didn’t happen because my model had disappeared behind the couch from the moment I stepped in the house. At a second attempt a week later I could move the couch a little without Balou looking for a new hiding place. Before this attempt took place I tried to contact Balou to explain what my intentions were. That it was safe and I would be calm.

On several occasions I noticed that unconscious contact moments had happened with my model. The Labrador pup Beer (Dutch for Bear) surprised me, and his owner, at the first moment we met. The enthusiastic way he greeted me wasn’t the normal behavior he showed while greeting new people. I ‘just’ had been thinking about him a few times.

Two weeks ago I used telepathic contact with an animal deliberately and with a purpose. Desiree emailed me that she would love to do a photo shoot with her cat Sky, a beautiful Maine Coon, but that she doubted it would be possible. Sky happened to be frantic for new people and sounds. Sky is two years old and has had a bad start after leaving home. He was brought to an animal shelter, where Desiree found him. Sky had been very open and cheerful as a kitten, according to the cattery he was born, and his change in behavior seemed strange.

Would ‘dialing in’ to Sky be of any use? Telepathy with animals is an undefinable matter for many people and not everybody is open to believe so it is always important to scan whether I can mention it or not. And if so how do I bring it up?

I was very anxious to meet Sky and would love to do a successful photo shoot so I decided to pop the question to Desiree. She loved the idea. To see if I really had contact with Sky we thought of a question that I couldn’t know the answer to. ‘Sky, what is your favorite toy?’

The telepathic contact I had with Sky was so sweet. First I got an image of the favorite toy and then a beautiful color appeared. To prove I saw it right Desiree sent me a photo of the toy, a grayish brown mouse with pink ears, which made me burst with laughter. Yes, that is what I saw! And also the color was right. It was the color of the wall in the bedroom in which Sky liked to cuddle before bedtime.

I also got an answer on my question about why Sky was so scared of people and sounds, but it’s difficult to verify because Desiree doesn’t have much details about his background. It is knowing and guessing at the same time.

A day before the shoot I had another go at ‘talking’ to Sky. That second moment was also successful. I showed myself, my big black camera and told him there would be some strange noises. And I announced to bring a gift for him. Sky showed he loved to ‘work’ together and also passed the message that Desiree didn’t need to worry about him. He felt like a peaceful and contented little boy.

That is how I found him the next day. While I was searching in my bag for the gift Sky was around without showing any signs of shyness or fear. I fully enjoyed the shoot with Sky and his playmate Meisje. It happened to be an hour filled with play and joy and the result is gorgeous. More of the result can be found on my portfolio page.

Zoals je je wel kunt voorstellen ben ik verknocht aan dieren. Omdat je hier beland bent, denk ik dat jij ook van dieren houdt en misschien wel dieren in huis hebt rondlopen. Mijn interesse in dieren is best breed. Dat gaat van mooie boeken over dieren, iets doen voor (zwerf)dieren, communiceren met dieren tot, natuurlijk, dierenfotografie.

‘Beelden van alledaags leven’

Wat ik leuk vind, is om naast het delen van mijn foto’s ook iets te delen over wat me inspireert op gebied van fotografie en in de dierenwereld. Dat kan een boek zijn, of een getalenteerde dierenfotograaf, maar ook een interessante website, bijzondere speeltjes en zelfs leuke opdrachten om zelf uit te proberen op je huisdier.

Vandaag wil ik een mooie foto en een inspirerende website met je delen: The Dog Blog by RiverDog Prints.

Sinds 2010 ben ik kind aan huis bij Big Picture Classes, een organisatie die online inspirerende cursussen en workshops aanbiedt op gebied van fotografie, schrijven, persoonlijk welbevinden en mindfull leven. Inmiddels heb ik alle fotografie cursussen van Tracey Clark gevolgd en deze maand is zelfs mijn eigen cursus online gegaan, Pet Photography.

Het mooie aan deze manier van leren is dat je contact hebt met interessante mensen over de gehele wereld. Door de cursussen van Tracey ben ik in een kring van prachtige getalenteerde vrouwen beland die allemaal gepassioneerd fotograferen, waaronder een aantal die verzot is op het fotograferen van hun eigen dieren. Eén van die vrouwen is mijn vriendin Kris McNeil.

Een foto van Kris’ hond Roscoe is vorige week genoemd op Angie Allen’s The Dog Blog. Haar foto laat een herkenbare dagelijkse gebeurtenis zien en is prachtig en inspirerend.

Veel dierenfotografen werken in een studio. Omdat ik denk dat dieren het meest op hun gemak zijn in hun eigen omgeving werk ik altijd bij mijn modellen thuis. Mooie fotografie  gaat ook over de alledaagse dingen die je met je dier mee maakt. Zoals de foto van Kris laat zien. Dit soort taferelen maak ik in mijn werk niet vaak mee, maar ik kan er wel intens van genieten.

De dogblog van Riverdogsprints is een genot voor het oog en zeker de moeite waard om te volgen. Wekelijks wordt er een nieuwe foto gedeeld.

As you can imagine I am smitten with animals. Because you are here I think you love animals too and maybe even have got some four-legged friends walking around the house. My interest in animals is wide. From beautiful books, being active in animal rescue to communicating with animals and animal photography.

‘Images of daily life’

What I would like to do, besides sharing my photos, is also share with you what inspires me in the field of photography and in the animal kingdom. That may be a book, a talented animal photographer, but also an interesting website, funny toys and even some assignments to practice on your own pets.

Since 2010 I have been present at the playground of Big Picture Classes, an organization that offers inspiring online classes and workshops in photography, scrapbooking, writing, personal wellbeing and mindful living. Till now I have participated in all photography classes taught by Tracey Clark and this month even my own class has gone online, Pet Photography.

The beauty in this way of learning is that you are together with interesting people from all over the world. Through Tracey’s classes I’ve met so many beautiful talented women with a passion for photography and among them some who adore photographing their own pets. One of those women is my friend Kris McNeil.

A photo of Kris’ dog Roscoe has been featured on Angie Allen’s The Dog Blog.  Her photo shows recognizable daily life and is beautiful and inspiring.

A lot of animal photographers shoot in a studio. I work only with animals in their own home because I think that is the place they feel best. Touching photography also involves capturing moments from daily life. Which I don’t encounter much because I’m just in the home for a brief moment. I intensely can enjoy images of daily life from other talented photographers.

The Dog Blog is a pleasure to the eye and absolutely worth following. Every week another gorgeous photo is featured.

Een tijdje geleden ontving ik een bericht van Kirsten die kort geleden haar kat had verloren. Ze had weinig foto’s laten afdrukken in het verleden en de foto’s die ze had waren gemaakt met haar telefoon. Van de kwaliteit was ze niet onder de indruk.

Eric en ik hebben vorig jaar afscheid moeten nemen van onze katten Jesse en Tom. Het eerste wat ik deed was in mijn archief duiken om een foto te zoeken die ik kon afdrukken en neerzetten. Iets tastbaars te hebben, in de vorm van een foto, helpt mij om de herinnering levend te houden en Jesse en Tom dichtbij te voelen.

Het bericht van Kirsten raakte me omdat ik wist hoeveel verdriet het deed om geen mooie tastbare herinnering te hebben.

‘Wat een uitdaging!’

Na het lezen van het bericht kreeg ik een ingeving. Mijn vingers kriebelden om het uit te proberen. Wat zou ik kunnen doen met de foto’s van Kirsten als ik die naar mijn iPhone zou uploaden? Zouden de ‘afgekeurde’ foto’s iets moois kunnen opleveren als ik die zou bewerken met wat apps? Wat een uitdaging!

Sinds ik mijn iPhone heb ben ik een fervent fan van iPhoneography. Ik gebruik verschillende apps om mijn foto’s te bewerken. Wat het fotograferen met mijn iPhone en het bewerken van mijn foto’s zo leuk maakt, is dat bijna elke foto om te toveren is tot een creatief kunstwerk. Niet allemaal natuurlijk.

Zes foto’s heb ik op verschillende manieren bewerkt. Het is me gelukt om van foto’s die op het eerste gezicht gewoon leken iets bijzonders te maken. Vijf foto’s zijn uiteindelijk te gebruiken, omdat één foto toch wel heel klein bleek te zijn.

De mogelijkheden met iPhoneography zijn oneindig. Het enige ‘nadeel’ is dat de foto’s niet al te groot kunnen worden afgedrukt, de maximum grootte is 20x20cm of zelfs maar 13x13cm. Een fotoserie van vier, vijf of zes kleine foto’s ingelijst met een mooi passe-partout kan er echter prachtig uitzien.

Dit unieke experiment heeft ervoor gezorgd dat ik iets nieuws kan aanbieden, JofabiPhoneography, een creatieve fotobewerking van jouw eigen foto’s. Deze ‘fotosessie op afstand’ omvat een fotobewerking van een uur met maximaal vijf foto’s, een online fotoboek met het resultaat, vijf prints van 13x13cm of 20x20cm (afhankelijk van de grootte van de originele bestanden) en de digitale bestanden van de bewerkte foto’s. Dit alles voor een prijs van €75,-, inclusief BTW.

A while ago I received a message from Kirsten who lost her beloved cat not so long ago. She hadn’t taken many photos of her cat in the past. The photos she had were taken with her phone and the quality didn’t impress her.

Eric and I have lost our cats Jesse and Tom last year. The first thing I did then was searching in my archives for photos to print and frame. To have something tangible, a photo, helps me to keep the memory alive and keep Jesse and Tom close to my heart.

Kirsten’s message touched me because I felt the sadness she must have felt not having a good photo.

‘What a great new challenge!’

After reading the message I got an idea. Mij fingers got itchy to try it out. What possibilities could I have when uploading the photos from Kirsten to my iPhone? Could I create something special with the ‘unappealing’ photos using some app processing? What a great new challenge!

Ever since I have got my iPhone I am an addict to iPhoneography. I use different apps to process my photos. What I like about shooting with my iPhone and processing the photos is that with almost any photo a wonderful work of art can be created. Well, of course not all.

I processed six photos in several different ways and I succeeded in creating something unique out of what seemed to be ordinary photos. Only five were usable in the end, one photo ended up quite small.

The possibilities with iPhoneography seem to be endless. The only ‘disadvantage’ is that the printable size isn’t too large, maximum size is 20x20cm or even no more than 13x13cm. But think about creating a gallery with four to six of your photos, framed with a passe-partout. That could be quite a sight.

This unique experiment has made me think about something new I can offer, JofabiPhoneography, a creative photo processing with your own photos. A ‘remote photo shoot’ includes an hour of processing with a maximum of five photos, an online photo book with the result, five prints from 13x13cm to 20x20cm (dependable on the size of your original photos) and the digital documents of the processed photos.
