Gisteren had ik een fotosessie met deze twee beauty’s. Sjakie & Moekie. Ze zijn twee jaar oud en broer en zus.

De eerder geplande fotoshoot een paar weken geleden ging helaas niet door doordat Moekie ziek werd. Haar ziekte deed me terugdenken aan onze eigen Poppy. Twee jaar geleden kreeg Poppy ernstige nierproblemen en werd opgegeven. Haar leven werd op dat moment gered met een dagelijks infuus. Met een speciaal dieet heeft Poppy toch nog een jaar extra bij ons gekregen. Gelukkig is Moekie weer helemaal hersteld.

Moekie was vol avontuur tijdens de fotosessie. Ze vond het heerlijk om onder de beddensprei te woelen en ze gaf me haar volle aandacht. Mijn ervaring met lapjeskatten is dat ze bijzonder karaktervol zijn. (Ja, ik heb ook een lapje thuis, Tara). Het verschil tussen zus en broer was duidelijk merkbaar.

Maar… misschien was het verschil niet alleen te danken aan kleur en karakter. Nu zat Sjakie helaas niet helemaal goed in zijn velletje. De foto’s laten ook een timide Sjakie zien. Het is altijd moeilijk om een model lastig te vallen voor een fotosessie als hij of zij zich niet helemaal goed voelt. Na samen een toiletrol uitgeplozen te hebben kon ik echter Sjakie’s mooie gezicht vastleggen.

Ik hoop dat Sjakie zich snel beter voelt.

Yesterday I met these two beauties. Sjakie & Moekie. They are two year old brother & sister.

The earlier planned photoshoot was cancelled due to Moekie’s illness a few weeks ago. Her illness brought back memories of our own Poppy. Who got ill with kidney problems. Her life was saved almost two years ago with daily fluids. The fluids and a special diet gave Poppy one extra year with us. Luckily Moekie has recovered fully.

Moekie was full of adventure. Loved to play on the bed trashing the bedcovers and give me her full attention. My experience with calico cats is that they are quite full of character. (Yes, I’ve got a calico friend too, Tara). The difference between sister and brother was noticeable.

But maybe the difference wasn’t entirely based on colors and character. Now Moekie’s brother Sjakie wasn’t feeling too well. The photos show Sjakie’s timid state a bit. It’s always hard to bother a model that isn’t feeling well enough to participate in the shoot. After fluffing a roll of toilet paper together I could capture his beauty.

Deze week ben ik op bezoek geweest bij drie door Mirtos Animal Project geredde honden uit Griekenland en Egypte.

Jonkies Thelma & Louise komen van het Griekse eiland Kreta. De vier jaar oude Tai is Egyptisch.

De twee meisjes zijn net zo indrukwekkend als de echte ‘Thelma & Louise’ uit de film. Het zijn twee zusjes, maar met allebei een heel verschillend karakter. Thelma, het grijze meisje, is speels, vrolijk en houdt van knuffelen. Louise is wat voorzichtiger, toch zacht en teder in haar gedrag.  Als je denkt aan het harde leven dat deze meisjes hadden in Griekenland dan is het wonderlijk dat ze nog steeds zo liefdevol zijn.

Zo makkelijk als het was om Thelma & Louise te fotograferen zo moeilijk ging de fotosessie met Tai. Tai is de mooie Duitse herder-achtige hond.

Tai is opgegroeid in Egypte. Hij heeft vier jaar in een betonnen kennel gewoond samen met veel te veel honden en veel te weinig eten. Je kan je vast wel een voorstelling maken van hoe dat geweest moet zijn. Deze vier jaar hebben Tai omgevormd tot een teruggetrokken en angstige hond. Zelfs na vijf maanden bij een liefdevol gastgezin heeft Tai nog steeds moeite met zich veilig voelen.

De drie vrienden van Tai waren vol enthousiasme tijdens de fotosessie. Ze sprongen op en neer om mijn aandacht te vragen. Tai niet. Het had heel wat voeten in de aarde om Tai zover te krijgen dat hij zijn mooie gezicht liet zien en niet meer voor me wegliep. Geduld, lieve woorden en een halve worst hebben geholpen.

Na de fotosessie was Tai zo ver dat ik zijn zachte wangen mocht kriebelen. Dat ging niet toch niet helemaal van harte. Ik denk dat Tai met een eigen thuis en geduldige mensen zich zo veilig durft te voelen dat hij zijn warme kant zal laten zien. Want die kant heeft hij.

Deze drie dieren te ervaren doet me weer beseffen waarom ik zo van dieren hou: ze zijn zo zacht van hart. Er is niet veel nodig om een dier gelukkig te maken. Een eigen bak met eten en wat liefde, begrip en geduld zijn al genoeg.

Ik heb altijd gevoeld dat dieren de ware mens in je zien. Een andere verklaring heb ik er niet voor waarom dieren zich zo kunnen aanpassen en zich opnieuw kunnen openstellen na een hard leven van mishandeling.

This week I had two photo shoots with rescued dogs from Mirtos Animal Project.

Youngsters Thelma & Louise come from Crete, Greece. Tai, four year old, is Egyptian.

The two girls were as impressive as the ‘real’ Thelma & Louise from the film. Two sisters, but being so different in character. Thelma, the grey one, is playful, cheerful and loves to cuddle. Louise is more cautious, but soft and tender too. When you think about the hard life these girls lived in Greece it is a miracle they still are so loving.

As easy as it was to shoot Thelma & Louise as hard it was to shoot Tai. Tai is the beautiful German-Shepherd-like dog in this series.

Tai had lived in Egypt for four years. Living together with too many dogs in a concrete kennel with not enough shade and not enough food in the bowls. You can imagine what his life must have looked like. This has deformed him into a withdrawn and scared dog. After having lived with his foster family for five months he still feels it hard to feel safe.

His three friends were jumping up and down to get my attention. Not Tai. It took some effort to capture his sweet face. Patience, sweet words and half a sausage helped.

After the shoot Tai let me tickle his soft cheeks. So I think that when Tai finds his new home he’ll warm up in time and feels safe again. Letting go of his fears is a very slow process.

Seeing each of these three dogs makes me aware why I love animals so much: they are so kind hearted. Not much is needed to make an animal happy. A bowl of food that doesn’t need to be shared, some love, understanding and patience is enough.

I always have known that animals see the real you. I don’t have another explanation for the way they are able to adapt and start over afresh after a hard life of abuse.

It has been a bit difficult for me to keep quiet about it. But the time has come! Announcing a great new Big Picture Classes Workshop, The Phone Photography Project.

Since the first moment I got my iPhone in 2010 I’ve been an iPhoneographer and Instagram addict. From that moment my ‘big girl camera’ has been in the closet a lot more. Shooting with a phone is so much fun.

For me iPhoneography and Instagram are linked. Instagram is the app I share what I shoot. Sharing my iPhone photos on Instagram has opened a whole new world. Connecting with other phoneographers around the world is exciting and inspiring. Editing my photos on my phone has inspired me too, in a very creative way. What I wouldn’t have dared doing on my computer before I started shooting with my iPhone I have done on my phone without hesitation and with ease.

To be able to share my enthusiasm with you and my knowledge about iPhoneography so far feels special.
